With the blessings of Param Pujya Guruji, Sewa (rendering of selfless service) was started in 1973 (at Shadipur, New Delhi, which happened to be my home) for people tormented by problems and ailments. To begin with, just a handful of persons used to come, but as the message spread through word of mouth, the crowd started swelling. A year later, i.e. in 1974, Sewa was shifted to Pujya Guruji’s residence at Shivpuri, Gurgaon. As more and more people started coming, Guruji fixed Bara Guruwar (the first bright Thursday after ‘amavas’) for rendering service to the public. He firmly believed, practiced and propagated the ideals of simplicity and universality. He allocated a room for ‘sthan’ at his residence where sewa (selfless service) to people was started. There was no pomp and show or ostentation. Guruji was strictly against publicity. He was not selling passports to heaven, but was showing the path of ‘bhakti yoga’ to people and directing them to lead their life with restraint and adopt a ‘satoguni’ way of life.
No offerings were accepted. People were, however, allowed to place a packet of meethi phulian, costing ten paise each at that time, at the sthan which was sanctified (blessed) and returned to the devotees as Prasad. Every single person who came to the sthan was given a cup of tea as Prasad from his side. Ever since then, this practice has been followed by the shishyas. At the Smadhi Sthal also, people are allowed to offer a handful of flowers only. Out of love and reverence, if they bring some sweets, those are distributed among the public along with a cup of tea from the sthan.
His concept of sewa had a universal approach. As the message spread through the word of mouth, hundreds and thousands of people from all walks of life – weaker sections of society, affluent business class, social, political, practicing all kinds of religious beliefs and faiths – Hindus, Sikhs, Muslims, Christians and followers of other beliefs also, irrespective of cast, colour and creed, have been visiting the sthan to resolve a variety of problems – physical, mental, material, spiritual and what not, and receive selfless service and spiritual cure to their ailments and solution to their problems.
